Modern-Traditional

I love the classic modernised take on baju kurung, the traditional wear for Malays. I've always adored the simplicity of the old-school, shapeless baju kurung (best worn during a scorching hot afternoon!) but the modern versionwith its added curves, without being too fittingis undoubtedly more flattering, and the more popular choice nowadays.

Interestingly, even though baju kurung is worn throughout Malaysia, the choice of colour and prints could vary in different places.

Marrying a man from Alor Setar/Penang, the Northern parts of Malaysia, gave me the opportunity to observe these differences. I noticed that most of Shah's family members and their extended members love bolder, stronger and deeper colours and striking prints, whereas the ladies around where I'm from favour slightly softer versions of everything.

This, of course, is sort of an extreme  generalisation, but I feel like it makes sense. Thoughts on this? Do share by commenting under this post!

This forest green with hints of bright blue fabric is given to me by my mother-in-law maybe three years ago. I sent it to her tailor to be made into a simple modern baju kurung but I never got around to wearing it, until Shah's cousin had a green-and-pink-themed wedding in Penang recently. I thought it was the perfect time to finally wear this number.

I even matched my mother-in-law that day, so it was extra special!
