Figuring Out My 2018 Style 'Resolution' | Chambray & Mickey Again

I've lamented about the exact identity of my style in the past and I still occasionally do until today, but I always try to remember what my dear reader and friend Judy has said relating to this in one of those laments about my style:
"I believe that our personal style is ever evolving. Who wants to prematurely label themselves in any aspect of life????"
When she puts it that way, well, who does, indeed! (Thank you Judy xo) It's a constant good reminder for myself; after all there are outfits in this blog that I am not interested in repeating again but had felt strongly about it at that time.

I'm quite the "according-to-my-mood" dresser so who knows what exactly I want to wear next weekend, let alone next year?

That being said, I do like the idea of evolving my style — or more accurately, improving it. Take this outfit consisting of Shah's chambray shirt and Mickey patch jeans (which I like to wear with sheer overlays) as an example: it's so easy to put together, perfect as "something to throw on" when I need to quickly head out of the house.

It's just that I don't know if I want to document something similar for Affordorable again in 2018, you know?

I absolutely adore Shah's chambray shirt but if you ask me now to pick between this exact outfit and the chambray shirt + red studded flats, I'd say the latter is something I envision myself wearing more in the near future; it's basically still the same casual chambray / jeans outfit but just slightly fancier, more "chic".

Note: Don't get me wrong, I'm not about to give up my sneakers though!

Moving forward — a new year is upon us, ahhhhhhh! — I'm interested in making some changes to my wardrobe, stemming from how recently I really have been wishing for more classics every time I scan my closet for something to wear out.

Obviously that translates to shopping, and sure it's "yay!" and all but I just did a little shopping a few days ago (finally found a good tiered skirt at H&M and bought some earrings at Lovisa) but I find it hard to pick out things that I absolutely must have, unlike before — and that's a GOOD THING.

I was such an impulsive purchaser before and I recognise that that needs changing (my guess is this is one of the reasons I am constantly dissatisfied when I scan my closet). Reading Tolly Dolly Posh teaches me plenty; I don't know about ever turning into an ethical shopper but I can certainly start practicing making more conscious decisions when it comes to shopping.

I don't do New Year's resolutions but if I were to have some, I suppose "more-conscious shopping" would be one of them.

Perhaps anyone else has a style resolution to make as well?

    1. You are an inspiration Liyana!
I wish I was as half as cool as you.

I like the idea of being more ethical and mindful when shopping... and reworking items to make them more versatile and wearable.
Maybe my resolution should be to take occassion specific items and make them more day-to-day appropriate?!

      Beautiful photographs BTW!

      1. Thank you, Samantha. I wish I think I'm as cool as you think I am.

I've always thought you have the knack to turn any item of clothing day-to-day appropriate, actually, plus I also do think you're blessed with a slender tall frame to pull off everything. So if you ask me, you're doing an amazing job at that already on Fake Fabulous, so I would just ask for more of it! (The faux-fur M&S coat is a great example.)

Ethical fashion is interesting to learn - and probably hard to absorb for high-street lovers like me! One step at a time, I guess!

    2. Oh my dear Liyana!! I'm so very flattered that you very kindly acknowledged respect for my fashion philosophy but I'm amazed that I've actually been quoted! You are SO sweet!! I still believe what I said about not falling like a peg into a fashion hole. Where's the fun in that?? HOWEVER! :-):-) Over the course of your life you'll definitely begin to see some leanings and patterns. I think it's best to embrace those preferences and own them.
I LOVE your preferences for a bit of whimsy, charm and kitsch. I may not choose these looks very often but my heart is often stolen by these Disneyish, universally sweet style touches as well. Samantha, of Fake Fabulous, has a wonderful way of including little kitschy touches with classical looks and in my view classic looks NEED a touch of humor/light heartedness!
I LOVE the way you do YOU Liyana!!
I also get your examination of and desire to become more conscientious about my buying impulsivity and want to become more mindful in my purchases. Charity and consignment shopping are ways I currently curb overconsumption of new clothes but there's room for more improvement...
Thank you again for being so complimentary Liyana. XXOO LOVE, Jude

      1. I always love your little nuggets of wisdom, Judy! Whenever I get frustrated about dressing up (thinking things like "Ugh where am I going with this") I always remember what you said, and then it's easier to go with the flow - with MY flow.

Oh no I don't know if I could EVER let go of my Disney things! I like the idea of wearing classics head to toe but then throwing something like my Alice In Wonderland clutch into the mix. I'm really thinking about balance now.

And yes, Samantha is amazing at mixing and matching, she's hands down one of my most favourite bloggers out there!

I keep up with two smart ethical fashion bloggers (both below 18!) and I have to admit, it's a little scary to learn certain things at first. To know that buyers can have responsibilities when it comes to their shopping habits. I know I can't dive head first into it so I thought maybe I should just try dipping my toes first!

    3. Oh thank you for the mention, you! What a lovely surprise ^.^ I always appreciate your comments as they help me in understanding how to be more helpful for people on their "ethical journey". Being more conscious is most definitely a great first step. Glad I can be of service ;)

      1. You know Tolly, I have been into fast fashion since I was 12; buying something amazing on sale always feels like a rush. I'm now in my 30s so fast fashion has become a habit of sorts, and I think there are a lot of people like me out there. My guess is it's not like we choose to ignore the reality of fast fashion, but it's more out of not being exposed to it.

I've followed you for quite a while, before you started championing ethical and sustainable fashion, but if I hadn't I would probably still be in my own little bubble. The bubble still hasn't popped, I must admit (like I say, shopping fast fashion is a habit!) but your blog has planted an ethical "seed" in my head. I really don't know how far I'd go with being ethical when it comes to fashion but I am determined to try and make some changes - thanks to you <3

    4. My style is always changing too and I think it's a pretty good thing. We grow everyday, so one's style grows too over the years. I don't shop frequently but I can be an impulsive buyer sometimes, lol. I'm trying to curb that too. HOWEVER, I'm definitely gonna replicate this look in my style🖤🖤🖤

      1. I think my shopping habits have changed for the better since this post (at least, I hope so!) but I can't say I never make impulsive purchases anymore. Never stop trying, though!

PS: You would look so cool in this outfit!
