Same Dress, Different Styling | Floral Ruffle Dress & Face Earrings

I mused out loud about the lack of long-sleeved maxi dresses — and maxi skirts, might I add — in the market back in 2016.
And today, I'm about to do it again. Brace yourself, people.

I can't help it, but if there's a way for people to understand why I keep "musing out loud" (<--- a nicer-sounding phrase to substitute the word "whining", really) about it, imagine this: you're a hijabi who lives in a country that's not only super hot but also ultra humid all-year-round, and strolling around in a thin, flowy, non-transparent one-piece that covers the necessary part is practically the ultimate luxury.

I still haven't found a dress that fits that description since discovering this floral dress on a mannequin in H&M's storefront two years ago (why though whyyy) so it gets pulled out of my closet a lot.

This dress may not be new but the fact that I feel good in it makes it feel new enough every single time, if that makes sense.

Probably because I don't settle for the same styling each time I put it on, but can't say I don't worry about slipping the dress on one day and panicking about not having anything fresh to pair it with.

But for now, let's concentrate on the positives, shall we? The dress is not the only old thing here, as that sling bag was bought in Tokyo in 2015, guys. So, really, I'm sure I still have loads of stuff at the back of my closet to match this dress in the future!

I just had to try out the face earrings trend and just got these at Lovisa (the place where I get 99% of my earrings, basically.) These shoes, however, are only sort of new, if you can call a pair of shoes you bought ages ago and stowed away at the back of your closet "new", that is... I can't believe I forgot I own such an obnoxious-looking pair of sneakers, forgive me.

    1. I like your new format Liyana!
I also think this dress is a winner. It's so colorful and that makes styling it more fun, easier (?) and adds to it's versatility.
Have you thought of finding fabric that replicates the quality and fiber content of this dress and having a couple additional dresses made? They could be dresses that are basic but amenable to many accessories...I'll bet there are other hijabis in the same frustrating position! Maybe there's a business idea here?! :-)

      1. By new format I think you meant my blog look? If so, I'm so, so glad you do!

The dress is definitely easy to style, there are plenty of colours in it to pick out from and accented, plus the black background helps a lot too.

Oh I thought about making my own dresses many times! I used to send fabrics to my tailor and make dresses, but they're mostly traditional-like dresses that I wear to formal events. It costs so much more to tailor-made a dress though, not to mention the time and energy involved, but I definitely loved having something that I and only I owned.

I can't deny that you have a VERY good point about making my own dresses; there are actually plenty of local designers in Malaysia that sell modest dresses at relatively affordable prices but so far none of them suit my "perfect dress" description (plus the quality makes me scoff at times, I'll be honest; even H&M and Forever21 have better quality!). I have to seriously think about going back to my tailor now...

    2. Well, I for one, LOVE your obnoxious trainers! :o)
I love it all the ways you styled it but my favourite is the go-with-everything... aka go-with-nothing scarf and the Darth Vader socks.
      Fabulous.

      1. I'm actually really happy YOU like these gold-tipped shoes! I like them too but was worried people would think they're a bit much, but then my milder-dressed sister said she wanted them and now you said you like them, so I feel all good about owning them now.

I also feel like I just have to dig out that scarf again and give it another go now that that outfit's your fave! <3

    3. Girlie, I'm loving what you did to your blog. As for the obnoxious sneakers, haha, you are a superstar after all. Nothing less than a gold toe shoe is what you need. Actually, I didn't realize that they were sneakers. I though they were a fancy sandal! Hahaha. The visual illusion from the gold toe was pretty strong. You wear the best of prints, by the way. Always vibrant and full of life. And your makeup, girl, you are so on point! Sassy Liyana ;) xoxo

      1. I am SO GLAD you love my new blog look! xxxooo

Oh wow, if those were sandals, they would be some pretty badass-looking sandals. I never thought shiny gold shoes would be my thing but, well, I never stopped surprising myself, hahaha!
